An ineffective oral hygiene routine can lead to an excessive amount of tartar buildup at the gum line. Tartar at the gum line is the most common cause of gum disease. If gum disease is not resolved early, the infection and subsequent inflammation can cause your gums to recede from your teeth creating pockets of infection that often require surgical intervention.
Gingival flap surgery is one of the more common ways to remove the infection caused by advanced gum disease.
The procedure can be performed on outpatient basis and usually requires deep sedation. Afterward you will need to have a friend of family drive you and help you out at home until you are back on your feet.
During the procedure a periodontist or oral surgeon will make a small incision is made in the gums. This exposes the infected area so it can be removed. They will adapt some your health gum tissue over the base of your teeth to restore some of the protection previously provided by your gums.
After the procedure they may prescribe antibiotics, pain killers or anti-inflammatory medication to help deal with pain or any lingering infection.
